José - London SE1 3UB: Reviews & Ratings
Great place for a drink and tapas. Outside tends to be busy and limited seating. But space inside around 5pm. Large variety of items to select from. We had enough on each plate for 4 to have a taste. The staff are amazing and service was quick. Place is clean and welcoming. More of an adult place but some children were there. Highly recommend.
Tucked away on Bermondsey Street, José is a lively tapas bar that captures the essence of Spanish dining — small plates, big flavours, and a bustling, convivial atmosphere. We started with some classics: jamón ibérico, beautifully marbled and rich, and padrón peppers, blistered and simply seasoned with sea salt — the kind of effortless perfection that makes Spanish food so appealing. The pan con tomate was fresh and satisfying, with just the right balance of ripe tomato and olive oil on crusty bread. The real highlight, however, was the sirloin steak with chimichurri — perfectly cooked, juicy, and bursting with flavour. It was genuinely one of the best steaks I’ve had in London, outshining many dedicated steakhouses. The grilled octopus was tender and nicely charred, though it left me wishing José offered a wider selection of seafood dishes, as the menu leans more toward meat and vegetable plates. Service was warm and efficient despite the steady crowd, and the overall experience felt authentically Spanish — casual, energetic, and full of character. ⭐ Rating: 4.5/5 A must-visit for tapas lovers and anyone craving excellent steak in a relaxed setting. Walk-in only
There it is. The best tortilla I’ve tasted. I knew this from previous experience but needed to reconfirm the fact. Jose is one of three great restaurants owned by the feted Spanish chef, Jose Pizarro, on Bermondsey Street near London Bridge station. It is a small tapas bar, the most informal of the three and for me, the location of my first experience of JP’s authentic food. some 10 years ago. The open kitchen is tiny as is the bar, the place is packed but still the delicious plates keep coming and the servers slip between the customers without knocking into anyone or spilling drinks! The two blackboard menus hang behind the bar - offering a mix of consistent dishes and specials. We decided on the tortilla - ever so runny in the middle, infused with some soft, sweet onion. Octopus and chickpeas - deep sea flavours and charred chicken skewers served with a mojo verde spicy sauce. A couple of small, cold Estrellas and then a final run at the chocolate pot. Dark, rich and finished with olive oil and sea salt. Boom. Happy days. I miss living around the corner from this place but absence makes my heart grow fonder.
